Ash Wednesday

The Beginning of Lent

What happens on Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the day after Shrove Tuesday and signals the start of Lent. It is called ‘Ash Wednesday’ because Lent is a time when people are sorry for the wrong things in their lives and ashes are used in the Bible as signs of sadness.
Some churches have a special part in a service called ‘ashing’. As a way of showing sorrow for wrong things done, and as a reminder that all die, the Priest makes a sign of the cross in ashes on the forehead of each person. The ashes are usually made from burning palm crosses that were kept from Palm Sunday the previous year.
Lent is a time when Christians think about the things they have done and the way that God wants them to live. Saying sorry to God by confessing our sins – owning up to the wrong things we have done – is a more important part of people’s worship and prayer during Lent.

We have made our Lenten promises to Walk with Jesus during this time of preparation.  What sacrifices will you be making?  How will you be putting others first?

Next week we will be making our Sacrament of Reconciliation at church.

This week in maths - shape

We have been revising our knowledge of 3D and 2D shapes.  Today we understood the term irregular shape and what a polygon is.
For those of you that love a sing-a-long, here is the catchy polygon song again!

We are also investigating right angles in 2D shapes and will learn about the perimeter of a 2D shape!

We will have covered a lot of work in maths this week.  Can you remember what all this new vocabulary means?

Would you have liked Roman food?

Another video from the talented Horrible Histories crew - would you eat this food now?

Roman Gods - another link from Horrible Histories

The Roman Invasion of Britain - according to Horrible Histories TV!

This video will remind us of how and why the Romans invaded Britain.  He talks almost as quickly as I do!!!

Science investigations

As part of our science topic, we carried out an investigation to find out whether plants really do need roots.

We explored the results before we broke up and will write them up when we return to school.
Can you remember what we did?  How did we create a fair test?  What happened?  What was your original prediction?  Were you right?  Can you explain the journey the water takes through the plant?

We will also see what has happened in our other investigation - do plants need leaves?  What was your prediction?

PE - it's cold outside!

After half term we will be finishing our unit of work on Dance.  We will then be moving onto Striking and Fielding Games.  As most of these lessons will be outside (weather permitting) we recommend that you pack a dark pair of jogging bottoms into your PE kit, as the weather is still chilly.
