Book Fair Challenge

WOOHOO! The Book Fair returns to Holy Souls School, straight after half term.  As usual, you will have the opportunity to visit the fair every evening after school with your parents, for a week.  This is a great way to increase your reading skills and a super fundraiser for the school community.

Mrs Kielstra has set us a challenge, details of which have also been sent home.

Do you have any books at home that you no longer want and would like to donate to the school?  Consider which year group it would be appropriate for and write a summary of it.

Bring the book and your written summary into school when we return and Mrs Kielstra will take a look at your entry!

Are you a bookworm?

How do we pray the Rosary? - Mrs Girling's Challenge

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF MARY

Mary gave us the gift of this special prayer.
What other names do we know Mary by?  Why is she so special to us?

Mrs Girling has challenged us to find out all about the Rosary.  We have sent home your challenge sheet and look forward to sharing what you have found out.

This is very useful for Year 3's Sacramental preparation, as we ask Mary Our Mother to give us the strength to make the right choices and pray for our wrong choices on our Journey of Faith

sorry it is the wrong way round - a slight technical problem!

Here are some useful websites to help you complete your challenge.

GOOD LUCK!

Christmas Card Challenge

The Father Hudson Society is one of our very important charities that we support at Holy Souls School.

All children have been set a Christmas Card Challenge to design your own unique Christmas Card.  We have sent you home with posters with the details and challange you to design a Christmas Card.  All entries need to be returned before 19th November, so that Mrs Girling can send them off to The Father Hudson Society.

GOOD LUCK AND GET CREATIVE!

Half Term Fun Challenges!

Once again, thank you for your hard work so far.

Year 3 have set some maths homework, to do with our shape work, which we would like you to complete over half term and bring back in on Tuesday 5th November.

Mrs Girling and Mrs Kielstra have also set up some whole school fun challenges for you to have a go at!

The details of each challenge can be found on the above blog posts.

WHY NOT GET YOUR PARENTS involved in helping you - the challenges are fun and creative, and remember, THEY COULD WIN YOU A REWARD!

Well done and Happy Half Term!

Well done for all of your hard work this half term.  Have a safe and restful week.

Remember to keep up with your reading, times tables and spellings.

You may want to have a look at these links for a bit of fun too!

Sorting 2D shapes

Today we sorted 2D shapes into a Carroll diagram.

We used a Year 6 piece of equipment called a 'set square' - can you remember what this helped us to find out about a shape?
Can you remember the properties of a quadrilateral?
What other new words did you learn in maths today?

Do you know your tenses?

We're posting this link, by popular request, from our lesson on tenses today.

Help Star to launch her rocket by choosing the correct tense - BLAST OFF!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/starship/english/games/blast_the_rocket/small_sound/standard.shtml

Remember, this is useful for our work on non-chronological reports - which tense should it be written in, PAST or PRESENT?

Another song to help you remember 2D shapes!

What do you know about 2D shapes? What are their properties?
You'll never forget now that this song will be stuck in your head!

The choice is yours...

As part of our preparation for our First Confessions we have been discussing Good and Bad choices, and the consequences it has on others, as well as ourselves.

Take some time to reflect on your recent actions...Was it a Good or Bad choice? How did it make others feel?  How did it make you feel?  Could you have made a different choice?

Teeth and Eggs - whatever next?

Today, in science, we discovered that the shell of an egg is similar to the enamel on our teeth.  We watched this video to understand how sugary drinks can effect our teeth.

 http://www.magicexperiments.com/magic-egg-brushing-experiment/

Perhaps you would like to have a go at this experiment at home - don't forget to record your results and share them with the class.

Remember - DON'T WORRY, JUST BRUSH YOUR TEETH REGULARLY.....SIMPLES!

Another catchy tune for our shape work!

Here is the other site that we used to day for shape - this time to describe the properties of 3D shapes!

YOU WILL SOON BE SINGING THESE SONGS IN YOUR SLEEP AND QUICKLY BECOME A SHAPE MATHEMATICIAN!

Awards Assembly

Wow - it's that time of year again, as we approach the end of our first half term!

Key Stage 2 will be holding their awards assembly, in the school hall, on the morning of Wednesday 23rd October, to celebrate this half terms achievements.  As always,  our parents are more than welcome to attend and celebrate with us!

This week in maths - shape

This week in maths we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes.

Here is a fun way to remember 3d shapes. Can you tell me the names of any others?

Have a go at this game for a reminder of all the 2D shapes you know.

What's the difference?

Today we have done some follow up work on our school trip to Middleton.
We have compared the locations of where we live and Middleton.  Can you remember what we have found out?  What is similar and what is different?  Where would you rather live and why?

Practise all kinds of maths!

Here is a useful link that we have been using in our maths lessons to practise all kinds of areas of maths including times tables, addition and subtraction, and number sequences and patterns.

Well done Class 3NS!

A big well done to Class 3NS who lead our assembly this week.  We thought you all did very well, spoke very clearly and we particularly enjoyed your cheer leading!

This will prepare all of the children in Year 3 over the coming weeks, as we talk about the need to say sorry and to forgive others, as we prepare to make our Sacrament of Confession for the first time.

Art

As part of our Art topic this term we are exploring and creating relationship portraits.

We have used a wooden artists mannequin to help us to draw a person.

We have also used landscape work from famous artists to understand how to create a background.

Who will you include in your relationship portrait, what will you be doing and what will be your background?

TIMES TABLES

Times table Help!

Here are some wonderful sites to help you with your times tables. Remember we are tested regularly on them!
First a great site from Woodlands Primary School in Kenthttp://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/timestable/index.html

This one does exactly what it says on the tin!!http://www.learnyourtables.co.uk/

Another great site is this one where you fly over the solar system solving tables problemshttp://www.brainormous.com/online/loader_multiflyer.html

Sacramental preparation

This is a very exciting and important time of preparation in Year 3.  Please enjoy helping your child to understand this time by attending Sunday masses at our Parish Church. Perhaps you could share your own memories and experiences of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

As part of this preparation, we are sending letters home this week inviting you to attend an RE workshop, in school on Thursday 7th November, where you will have the opportunity to work directly with your child.  Following this, after school on the same day, there will be a meeting at Holy Souls and Sacred Hearts Church regarding the Sacrament of Reconciliation (First Confessions).  It is important that an adult attends both of these gatherings as dates and information regarding Sacramental preparation will be discussed.

Parents evening and updates!

Thank you all for attending parent consultations over the past few weeks - it has been a real pleasure meeting you all and discussing your child's progress for the forthcoming year.  We hope you found the time useful.

As promised, we will do our best to keep you up-to-date with what is happening over the year and what we are covering within the different subjects.  Please keep checking the blog as new posts will appear regularly covering dates and subject content.

It would also be of great use if you could encourge your children to log onto the blog regularly as we will also post links to useful websites to help your children in the various subjects and topics we are covering.

Welcome to Year 3 2013/2014!

Welcome to Year 3 Blog!  Sorry it has taken so long to get started, we have had a few technical problems!!

Just a few reminders so far.....

Spellings and Reading
Keep practising your spellings every night and read your reading books!  Progress is checked daily in school.
Spelling tests are on Mondays and new spellings are also given for the week.

Times tables
Keep practising your times tables - x2, x5, x10, x3, x4 at the moment!  How many different ways can you practise them?

Homework
Literacy homework is set on a Thursday and Maths homework is set on a Friday.  All homework is to be completed and sent in for the following Tuesday.

As always, all of the Year 3 Team will gladly answer any of your queries - please try to keep them for the afternoon pick up of your child, as mornings can be pretty hectic!

Here's to a great year everyone!
