Our infomation book on plants

By Ethan

Why do plants need leaves?
To make food. They do this by taking in the sunlight.

What is the job of the root?
To hold the plant in the grond. It also takes in water from the soil.

Why do plants need leaves? This is so it can take in light to make food
so it can keep healthy.

What is the job of the root?

Roots take in water.
When a plant grows and it is in a small pot the roots cannot spread out so it has to
be in a bigger pot. Then it has more room.

Our Information book on plants

Today in our literacy lesson, some children will write their facts on green plants and put them on the blog.

We are learning to organise our work in sections. Have a look later at what we post!

Holy Souls Card Company. Meeting 2.

Meeting opened at 2.20 p.m.with thanks from Miss Cranmer for the ideas for our logo. Some will be put on display and we will vote for the best one.

Miss spoke about how we are to make the card and the different options for the designs.
We talked about what "raw materials" we need to make the card.
We suggested items such as: ribbon, glitter, felt pens, religious pictures, sequins, glue, card, feathers, plastic case for the card.

We spoke about getting religious pictures because drawing would be really hard. We decided that we might have to pay for these pictures and this would make the cost of the finished product more expensive. All of the raw materials will cost money and this will make the cost of the card more expensive.

The meeting closed at2.50 p.m.

Listening to God's word

In our RE lessons this term we have been learning how people listen to God's word and calling. Today we went to our Parish Church of Sacred Heart and Holy Souls in Acocks Green to celebrate Mass with the local community.

After Mass we spoke about the special place that the lectern has upon the altar. It is the place that we hear God's word from and the place where we can hear God calling us. Can you find the lectern upon this photo of the Altar of Holy Souls Church.

Times tables

We will be looking at our tables in maths again this week.

This is a great game to help you with any tables you find tricky. Give it a go!

Do seeds need warmth to germinate?

We have set up three experiments. One tray of seeds will be left by a warm radiator. One tray will be left in a cold cupboard. One tray will be left in a cold fridge.
Is this a fair test?
What might the results show?

Does a plant need water to grow? RESULTS

Here is a picture of the results from our experiment. You can clearly see that the plant which had 200ml of water added looks very healthy.
Can you spot the unhealthy plant which had no water at all last week? What does it look like?

Thank you Mr O'Kane!

Mr O'Kane has worked very hard over the past few weeks to keep our school safe in the very snowy weather.
Today he cleared a huge amount of the playground so that we could move around on it safely.
Here is a picture with the proof!

Making an Igloo

Today Year 3 and Year 5 made the most of the snowy weather and made an Igloo.
We worked as a team to collect snow and mould it into block shapes. Using co-operation and knowledge of 3D shapes, this is what we managed to create.
There was not quite enough snow for a whole igloo - but this was a pretty good effort! Well done everyone!
Check out our other pictures on the TV outside the office.

It's cold!!!

With all of the snow it really is cold. Luckily one of us can make something of it all!

Instructions

Have a go at making tea for my Gran. Put the pictures in the correct order and then write the instructions underneath. Don't forget those bossy (imperative) verbs and time connectives.

This is a good link for adding and subtraction games. ( There are also times and divide games!!)

Does a plant need water to grow?

We set up a fair test experiment to investigate this question.

We have left three green plants ( the same kind) in the same place, (with the same temperature, amount of light and size of pot) for a week.

The only condition we have changed is the amount of water we give to the plant each day.

Plant A has 200 ml of water.

Plant B has 100 ml of water.

Plant C has no water.

We have made predictions and will look at our results next lesson!

Following Instructions

This week in Literacy, we have been looking at instructions.
We followed a set of instructions to make our own Chinese lanterns.
Here is an example of some of them.
We looked at what needs to be included in a good set of instructions and will have a go next week at writing some of our own.

What is the job of the stem and the root?

On Friday, we talked about the jobs of the stem and the root in green plants.

We planned and set up and experiement to find scientific evidence to prove this.
We put a stalk of celery (green plant) into water stained with red food colouring. We predicted that the celery will have turned red when we look at it after the weekend.

Photo Frames

The children in 3C have been working very hard all term on making their photo frames with Mrs Somers. In DT, they have spent time designing their frames and working out the best way to make a support so that the frames can stand up.

Here are the finished frames - pretty impressive!!

3B's Assembly

Well done to everyone in 3B for a brilliant assembly this morning. Mr Barton's class told the rest of the school and our grown ups all about our preparation for First Confession and why it is so important to say sorry.

Operation Christmas Child

Well done to everyone in Year 3 who supported the shoe box appeal for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes have now been dispatched and should be on their way to children around the world.
