What is the job of the stem?

Today we talked about the jobs of the stem and the root in green plants.

We planned and set up and experiement to find scientific evidence to prove this.

We put a stalk of celery (green plant) into water stained with red food colouring. We predicted that the celery will have turned red when we look at it after the holidays. The red colouring shows us the path the water takes.

The Last week of term

We have a very busy and festive week in Year 3. Remember that we light the third pink candle tomorrow which means we can start to get excited!

On Monday,  it is Year 3 and 4 party day.

On Tuesday we have a whole school hymn practice.

On Wednesday morning we have KS2 awards assembly.

On Thursday we have whole school Mass over at Church.

On Friday we have our last gathering together before Christmas as a school.

Not to mention those children in the choir who have three performances with Mrs Aldred this week!

Remember to keep reading and that your last homeworks for this term are due in on Tuesday. There will be no spellings set over the holiday!

Tom and Jerry

A little bit of festive fun - I used to watch this cartoon before Christmas when I was little! What have Tom and Jerry learnt by the end of the cartoon? (Remember not to click on any other links on youtube without
checking with a grown up!)

This Sunday we will light the third Advent Candle.

It is PINK because it is GAUDETE Sunday!

Do plants need leaves to grow?

Two weeks ago we took the leaves off one plant and left them on the other. We did not change any of the other conditions the plants were in.
Here is what they looked like two weeks later. Why DO plants need leaves to grow well?

We will be finding out about the word Messiah.

What does Messiah mean?

Jesus is the Messiah,
i.e.
the Prophet and the Priest and the King.

The words Messiah  and Christ have the same meaning. Their original-language forms are ha-Mashiyach (Hebrew) and ho Christos (Greek), both meaning “the Anointed one”.

What other names do we call Jesus Christ?

We will also listen to a piece of Music called Handel's Messiah. How does it make you feel?

Next week in Maths...

... we will be looking at grid references and coordinates.
This is a game we will play in our maths lesson.

Coming up in our RE work about Christmas...

We will use this video to understand how the shepherds felt at the news of the birth of Jesus.

A very festive song!

Coming up in RE

In RE we will be talking about the Messiah and the Jesse Tree.

Jesse Trees date back to the middle ages. Even some ancient cathedrals have Jesse Tree designs in their stained glass windows.

The idea for a Jesse Tree is inspired from Isaiah 11:1, "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit." (Jesse was the father of King David.)

In Matthew chapter one, the Messiah, Jesus, is traced from the line of King David, and back to Abraham.

Can you make a suitable decoration for a Jesse tree at home?

We will look at this every day!
